Polly Earle and Brooks Garcia spoke on Sept. 27 to members of the Clarkesville Garden Club at a monthly meeting.
Both Earle of Clarkesville and Garcia of Demorest serve on the board of the Historic Clarkesville Cemetery Preservation, Inc. board of directors.
Earle is an expert in cemetery restoration and Garcia is an experienced landscape architect.
HCCP, Inc., a nonprofit organization, is in the process of restoring and preserving the historic Old Clarkesville Cemetery.
According to Earle and Garcia, it’s a long, slow process to make the cemetery a beautiful, welcoming place in downtown Clarkesville. Locals and visitors can visit ancestors or founders and settlers of this area or they can just stroll through enjoying its serene beauty.
The HCCP is currently working on a very tight budget for the restoration and preservation of the cemetery, which might take up to five years to complete, according to Garcia. Community support is crucial to the project’s success, he said.
