Daniel Lewis, an affectionate and dutiful son. Perhaps he called her once a week to tell her he loved her? Anyway, his headstone has been lying on the ground for we don’t know how long. It is what is called a tab and slot style. The base has come apart over time. Miss Polly is lovingly putting it back together. We think the ancient boxwood behind it was planted by the family to represent everlasting life. That makes it 164 years old! The work continues. #oldclarkesvillecemetery #restoration #wherehistoryneverdies #idigthedead

Honoring those who came before us and settled this place we call home has been a goal of the preservation group of the Old Clarkesville Cemetery. One way to do this is to locate and map the final resting place of every resident. This has been no easy task. Many graves are unmarked, the stones buried in the earth or the location erased by time. By mapping these sacred plots of ground, we can then go about recording the sites but more importantly show the community where they are. Perhaps plant material will accomplish this. If the stones exist then we will raise them up so that they can speak. A drunken line of orange flags begins to show the sheer number of our residents that are unmarked. #honoringthedead #lostbutnotforgotten #oldclarkesvillecemetery #idigthedead #wherehistoryneverdies
