A moving legacy

It is with sadness we announce the untimely death of friend and fellow board member Doug Henry.
Doug was good about saying ‘yes’ to his community.
It was a word he said often throughout his life. Generous with his time and talents, he was a constant and steady presence on the Clarkesville timeline.
Serving on the Historic Clarkesville Cemetery Preservation, Inc. board brought Doug joy.
He arrived at meetings – invariably a few minutes tardy – with a smile. The delay was due to his habit of walking everywhere.
Always eager to bring his singular perspective to the conversations about our historic landmark, he truly had a heart for this project and the community at large.
His familiar stride marked the days for downtown Clarkesville residents. Because he walked everywhere, Doug was attentive to details. His recall of the past provided an invaluable resource to the work of the cemetery board. Having grown up in downtown Clarkesville, he could tell us where the proverbial bodies were buried as he knew the descendants of many of the families represented at the Old Clarkesville Cemetery.
Those who knew Doug understood his deep love of the arts — theater specifically.
Last fall, we brought to life some of our residents with a new event – History among the Hemlocks – a Spirited Stroll through the Old Clarkesville Cemetery.
Doug channeled his colorful personality through the story of Calvin Hanks, a long-ago Clarkesville attorney murdered on the Clarkesville Square. Doug relished the role – it showed to those fortunate enough to witness his performance.
We will miss Doug – his smile, his energy, his wit and his commitment to Clarkesville.
❤️
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
